Selection of Charts Showing Research Results
On the Transcendental Meditation® Program (Part 1)

Over 500 studies have been completed on the physiological, psychological, and sociological effects of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation® and TM-Sidhi™ program, making it perhaps the most intensively studied technology in the field of human development. These studies have been conducted at 210 different universities and research institutions in 27 countries, and articles have now appeared in more than 100 scientific journals. These studies have been gathered in Scientific Research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program, Volumes 1-6, containing over 4,000 pages of scientific papers. Following is a selection of charts showing research results.

Physiological Indicators of Deep Rest

Through Transcendental Meditation

A meta-analysis, a scientific procedure for drawing definitive conclusions from large bodies of research, found Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique produced a significant increase in basal skin resistance compared to eyes-closed rest, indicating profound relaxation. Deep rest and relaxation were also indicated by greater decreases in respiration rates and plasma lactate levels compared to ordinary rest. These physiological changes occur spontaneously as the mind effortlessly settles to the state of restful alertness.

Increased Restful Alertness

Through Transcendental Meditation

These electroencephalograph (EEG) brain maps from a single subject illustrate the findings of several studies showing that Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique increases the EEG index of restful alertness--increased slow alpha frequency power in the frontal cortex. This change in the EEG indicates a relaxed state of wakefulness during Transcendental Meditation, an ordered state of brain functioning that is ideal preparation for dynamic activity.

Optimizing of Brain Functioning

Through Transcendental Meditation

Higher levels of EEG coherence measured during the practice of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique are significantly correlated with increased fluency of verbal creativity, increased efficiency in learning new concepts, more principled moral reasoning, higher verbal IQ, decreased neuroticism, clearer experiences of transcendental consciousness, and increased neurological efficiency, as measured by faster recovery of the H-reflex.

Increased Self-Actualization

Through Transcendental Meditation

Statistical meta-analysis of all available studies (42 independent outcomes) indicated that Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation program increases self-actualization much more than other forms of meditation and relaxation. Self-actualization refers to: integration and stability of personality, self-regard, emotional maturity, capacity for warm interpersonal relationships, and adaptive response to challenges.

Decreased Incidence of Disease

Through Transcendental Meditation

A five-year study of medical care utilization statistics on 2,000 people throughout the U.S. who regularly practiced Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program found that their overall rate of hospitalization was 56% lower than the norm. The group practicing Transcendental Meditation had fewer hospital admissions in all disease categories compared to the norm--including 87% less hospitalization for cardiovascular disease, 55% less for cancer, 87% less for diseases of the nervous system, and 73% less for nose, throat, and lung problems.

Reversal of the Aging Process

Through Transcendental Meditation

Biological age measures how old a person is physiologically. As a group, long-term meditators who had been practicing the Transcendental Meditation program for more than five years were physiologically 12 years younger than their chronological age, as measured by reduction of blood pressure, and better near-point vision and auditory discrimination. Short-term meditators were physiologically five years younger than their chronological age. The study statistically controlled for the effects of diet and exercise.

Decreased Hospitalization

Through Transcendental Meditation

Maharishi Ayur Veda is the most ancient and scientific system of natural medicine, using a variety of approaches that simultaneously influence mind, physiology, behavior, and environment to maintain health and promote longevity. A study found that people who participated in Maharishi Ayur Veda prevention programs, in addition to the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program, were hospitalized 84% less than the norm. People who practiced Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program were hospitalized 56% less than the norm.
